Abstract
Concreting under the water level has been used in structures such as docks, bridges, piles in grounds with high groundwater levels, and filler mortars in tunnels below the water surface. Segregation due to concreting below the water level is a major issue that extensive research is needed to evaluate all aspects of it. Although several studies has been done on the use of concreting under the water level, many of them has been made to improve submersible concrete placement and progress in machinery. In the initial methods, the attempt was made to reduce the contact of concrete with water and consequently reduce the washout of concrete. It should be noted that another approach to underwater concrete is to provide the stability necessity to prevent segregation and washout during concreting, with changes made in the concrete mixing design. In the term, this concrete is called "Anti Washout Concrete". In the case of the implementation of anti washout concrete, it is possible to use old machines and methods. The advantage of anti washout concrete is that in addition to ensuring better structural behavior of hardened concrete beneath the surface of the water, it can help reduce environmental contamination during concrete laying below the water. Among the solutions for increasing the stability of concrete against washout, it is possible to increase the cement content and to replace or add powder materials such as bentonite, limestone powder, microsilica and fly ash, increase the fine aggregate in concrete and use of Anti Washout Admixture or AWA. In this paper, at first methods for reducing washout in concrete was reviewed, then the AWA materials and their effects on concrete behavior were explained.
